Mark Nohra is a seasoned trial lawyer with extensive experience handling complex, high-profile litigation, including matters arising in politically sensitive contexts. He is known for his careful preparation, attention to detail, and deep understanding of his clients’ objectives, delivering effective representation in criminal, administrative, and regulatory matters.
Mark has served as counsel at all levels of court in British Columbia, the Federal Court of Canada, and in various other provinces, as well as before numerous administrative tribunals. He is committed to safeguarding his clients’ rights and navigating complex legal challenges with skill, diligence, and determination.
Notably, he served as lead counsel in R. v Christhurajah et al., a precedent-setting, lengthy jury trial involving an alleged international human smuggling operation aboard the MV Sun Sea. Despite significant resources devoted by the prosecution, the Canada Border Services Agency, and other investigative authorities, Mark and his team successfully secured a jury acquittal for his client.
Mark Nohra has a proven track record of successfully defending individuals and businesses in regulatory proceedings, guiding them through every stage — from initial investigations to hearings and judicial reviews. Mark Nohra successfully defended a prominent regulatory prosecution in one of the largest disciplinary proceedings ever conducted at the time by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (“CICC”), in CICC v. B., 2022 CICC 15. The case involved years of disclosure and preliminary hearings, culminating in a lengthy final hearing that revealed the weaknesses in the prosecution’s case. As a result, Mark and his team secured a successful outcome, allowing his client to retain their license and continue operating their thriving business. Once again, Mark Nohra and his legal team overcame significant odds and extensive prosecutorial resources to achieve this result.
Mark Nohra is widely experienced in the defence of high-profile sexual assault cases — a sensitive, increasingly nuanced and multifaceted area of law — routinely trying these cases in front of a jury. Mark secured acquittals on all six counts of sexual assault following a closely contested five-week jury trial in Penticton, British Columbia. Acting for a well-respected Indigenous healer facing allegations from six separate complainants arising out of therapy sessions, Mark advanced a defence grounded in thorough preparation and strategic cross-examination. By carefully testing the reliability and consistency of the prosecution’s evidence, he revealed material weaknesses in the prosecution’s case and achieved unanimous not guilty verdicts on every count of sexual assault in a matter involving significant legal and reputational stakes.
Mark Nohra’s goal-oriented approach to legal practice is deeply influenced by his background as a professional football player. After retiring from the British Columbia Lions following their 2006 Grey Cup victory, he brought the same discipline and focus that defined his athletic career into law. Mark was also a standout on the 1997 University of British Columbia football team, earning the prestigious Hec Crighton Award as the nation’s top player. His experiences on the field instilled a commitment to process and attention to detail — principles that continue to guide his work as a lawyer since graduating from University of British Columbia Law School in 2008.
